Pentre Ifan burial chamber, Cardigan - Spotted on a recent visit to Wales, the Pentre Ifan burial chamber is located 10 miles south of Cardigan Bay and is the largest and best preserved dolmen in Wales.
Believed to date to the Neolithic period at about 3500 years BC, it was used as a communal tomb and would have originally have been covered with a large stone mound about 36.6 meters in length and 17 metres wide. Some of the stones are now scattered, but at least seven are still in their original position.
The capstone is 5.1 metres in length, estimated to weigh 16 tonnes and rises 2.4 metres above the ground. It is delicately supported by the narrow tips of three uprights. The façade surrounding the entrance portal was built with carefully constructed dry stone walling.
Well worth the visit if anyone is in the area, it is well signposted off the main road, down narrow lanes and only a short walk to the exposed site from the car park
